What If You’re Gay? A New Feature.

By Tara Siegel Bernard – New York Times

Last month, we explored the many extra costs that same-sex couples incur because their unions are not recognized by the federal government. But we’d like that story to serve as a conversation starter. Now that we know the issues — extra health insurance costs, potentially higher tax bills, estate-planning hurdles, to name a few — we plan on exploring them in more detail. Right here.

Most of these financial inequities can’t be solved without federal recognition of marriage, which means that gay couples need to do more planning than a heterosexual married couple.

So in this space, we will delve into the financial issues that specifically affect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Using Ron’s series on divorce as a jumping-off point, some of our first posts will focus on the many complexities of gay divorce. You can also read Jennifer Saranow Schultz’s post on legislative developments relating to health benefits for gays and lesbians.
