NYC transgender man wins right to name change
By Associated Press
NEW YORK — A court in New York City has reversed a lower court’s decision rejecting a transgender man’s application to change his name because he didn’t provide medical documentation.
The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Manhattan made the ruling on Wednesday.
The transgender man sought to change his name from Leah Uri Winn-Ritzenberg to Olin Yuri Winn-Ritzenberg.
The city’s Civil Court in February denied the application. It said Winn-Ritzenberg had failed to provide a letter from a medical professional establishing his need for the change.
The appellate court wrote: “There is no sound basis in law or policy” for such a requirement.
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, which filed the appeal on behalf of Winn-Ritzenberg, applauded the decision.
