Kansas State-Salina student group rejects funding for transgender speaker

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — The Student Senate at Kansas State University at Salina has rejected a request to fund a transgender speaker.

Transgender male speaker Ryan Sallans was to speak at the university Nov. 23. But the university’s Student Governing Association on Tuesday rejected a request for $1,000 to pay Sallans’ fees and expenses.

Student Body President Brian Koester says the request sparked a big debate. He also says the senate wondered whether students would attend the speech during Thanksgiving week.

The 30-year-old Sallans, of Lincoln, Neb., was born a woman. He says his talks emphasize honoring and respecting who you are.

  1. Is this really a Trangender issue? There does not seem to be enough research on this article. The only fact given for rejecting the funding request is, Thanksgiving week. That’s a national holiday not a transgender issue. Am I missing something here?
