Kalamazoo passes protection for gay, lesbian and transgender people

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) – It’s now illegal for landlords and employers in Kalamazoo to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

“I have a hard time understanding why anyone has the need to discriminate against others,” said City Commissioner Sean McCann before voting for the ordinance Monday night.

An amendment to the Kalamazoo anti-discrimination ordinance passed unanimously at the city commission meeting. Under the ordinance, anyone who discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification could be fined up to $500.
Monday night’s vote came after months of debate and hours of comments from citizens.

“No one should be denied basic human protections,” said supporter Cindy Hunter.

“I would hate to have to sit there and ask someone what is their sexual preference before I start dealing with them,” said opponent James Vermeulen.

“I think it would be better if we the citizens decide if we pass this ordinance on the November ballot,” Kalamazoo resident Linda Hamilton told the commission.

To give voters the opportunity to consider the anti-discrimination amendment, opponents say they will immediately start circulating petitions to put the question on the November ballot.
