Why I use the women’s room

I would like to say a few words about House Bill 415 or the bathroom bill, as it has been come to be known as.

I am a male-to-female transsexual. I think it is a sad, sad day when people think that this bill is about giving sexual predators a pass to use the women’s restroom. Let’s face it folks, if these people are going to harm a child, it is going to happen weather this bill passes or not.

I use the women’s bathroom for several reasons. First and foremost it is an issue of safety. All it would take is one man to be offended and you could see someone being shot or beaten to death for having the misfortune of having to pee while out in public.

Second, transsexuals have to go through life as a woman or as a man, depending on the case, if we are to pass what is called the “real life test.” This is something all transsexuals must do before being able to have sex reassignment surgery, according to the Harry Benjamin standards of care.

Third, it is hard enough to go through life without being seen as freaks. Now imagine I’m all dressed up with my makeup – my hair is done, my nails are done, and I’m wearing a dress. Now imagine me going into the men’s restroom. Not a pretty picture for all concerned.

As for those of us who do use the bathroom for the gender we are living as – nine times out of 10 you don’t know we are there.
