Transgenders to find lovers online

CHENNAI: From the second week of April this year, the world wide web will open up for transgenders to help in their search for life partners. The matrimonial site for transgenders would be hosted by transgender activist Kalki, founder of the Sahodari Foundation — a trust for the welfare of transgenders in Tamil Nadu.Kalki told The New Indian Express that the website would be simple and effective. It would contain profiles of transwomen who wish to get married. Men who wish to settle down with them can send in their profiles.Kalki said transgenders too wanted to get married and this website would help. She said only about 0.5 per cent of transgenders in TN were married and added that men only looked at them as prostitutes or objects of sexual pleasure but no man ever thought of settling down with an aravani. “An aravani is never looked at as playing the role of a wife, mother, daughter-inlaw or sister. The society has to accept them as a part of it,” said Kalki. She said transgenders had given overwhelming response to the proposed website. Interestingly, one of the first profiles posted on the website would be Kalki’s. “Even I want to meet the man of my dreams through such a website,” she said. She said three profiles of transwomen were ready to be put up on the website.“A transgender has every right to experience marital life, this site will groom the idea and establish it as a custom,” she said. The website www.thirunangai.com, meaning respectable woman, is currently under construction.Though the idea of hosting such a website struck Kalki in September 2007, she started work on it three months ago.
